[Journal article] Symptom Severity Reported by Older Adults with Cancer and Its Impact on Survival Prognostication

01 Oct 2024

Authors: Wen Yang Goh, Allyn Y.M. Hum

Published in: Journal of Geriatric Oncology. Published online: 26 Sep 2024. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jgo.2024.102073

Summary points:

  1. We know that older adults suffer from symptoms as much as their younger counterparts, however, our paper suggests that based on the numerical rating scale, older adults with cancer report less severe symptoms and lesser symptoms.
  2. The reason for this is that older adults respond differently to how symptom assessment is commonly done because of multiple reasons such as cognition, education, culture and communication issues.
  3. Hence there is a need to explore innovative ways to assess the presence and severity of pain and other symptoms in older adults with cancer including involvement of multidisciplinary team.
