Welcome and thank you for visiting the website for The Palliative Care Centre for Excellence in Research and Education (PalC).
PalC was established in October 2017 with a dual aim to promote palliative care research and education, both being integral aspects in raising palliative care awareness, knowledge and skill.
Palliative care research has mostly been centered around cancer patients but with an increasingly ageing population, it must adapt to respond to the unmet needs of patients suffering from end organ diseases, who experience equally burdensome symptoms. End organ disease trajectories are highly variable with intervals of deterioration interspersed with brief periods of stability, increasing prognostic difficulty. Such challenges limit access to palliative care, unwittingly causing the end of life journey to be more stressful for families and patients to navigate. PalC aims to address knowledge gaps in end organ disease and models of care by growing the evidence-base. This is in synergism with training and education programs which enable healthcare professionals to provide disease-specific, needs-based palliative care for patients and their caregivers, allowing our patients to live their final days with dignity.
As in the care of our patients, PalC is a collaborative effort amongst clinicians, researchers and educators from the National Healthcare Group, Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and Dover Park Hospice. We also welcome interested investigators from other institutions to join us in the endeavor to refine and develop interventions, programmes and policies to benefit patients suffering from life-limiting illnesses, and their caregivers.
Whether you are a researcher, clinician or member of the public, we hope that you will find this website useful.
